Object Interactions

Interaction with objects and environments.

Picking up and interacting with objects at a basic level should be fairly intuitive and follow typical VR conventions. To pick up an interactable object just reach out to grab it by using the grip type action for your controller type.

Not all objects are interactable or grab-able and so it may take a little time for new users to get familiar with the environments, objects and which support VR interactions.

Generally we don’t use a touch highlighter on most objects, as we feel it breaks immersion, however that could change in the future.

The kind of things that are interactable:

  • Spray can and lid.
  • Paint roller.
  • Pallets (stack).
  • Outline Torch Project.
  • Wooden plank (more to follow soon).
  • Lift controls and doors.
  • Scissor lift.
  • Computer terminal.
  • Boombox (music player).
  • Bombastic (vending machine).

Depending on the controller type the experience will default to a ‘click to grab’ or ‘hold to grab’ style, i.e. on the Vive Wands it defaults to a ‘click to grab’ style, and on the Knuckles it defaults to a ‘hold to grab’ style. You can override the preferred grab style in the game options. Button configurations also change slightly depending on the connected controllers.

In cases where you need to push a button or grab and move a lever, the interaction should be similar to the real-world.

Note: we are planning to spend a decent amount of time improving the interactions system in the near-future.
